Historic Biehl Water Grinding Mill, Asbacherhütte

The historic, water-powered agate cutting mill is a completely atypical water-powered cutting mill in comparison to the “Weiherschleife”. The reason for this can be traced back to the fact that it is a former gypsum mill, which was converted into a grinding mill in 1880.

The Asbach Grinding Mill remains a genuine production site to this day, unlike many historical grinding mills that are primarily kept in operation for tourism purposes. Even today, once inside visitors can experience first-hand how stone cutting and grinding was done use old techniques.

This is how Ernst Biehl junior produced, for example, his own electricity with the help of a water wheel. An almost 100-year-old generator is driven by a transmission to generate electricity, which delivers 100 D.C. voltage. Work on the gemstones is done very vividly while lying face down on the traditional tipping chair, which enables the person grinding and shaping the gemstone to press it very firmly against the grindstone as needed. A smoked bacon rind serves as an axle bearing for this stone.

Tip: Techies will find an original Edison light bulb still in operation here.
