“Jakob Bengel” industrial monument: the historical chain and costume jewellery factory

History is in the air at the historic Jakob Bengel watch chain and jewelry factory dating back to 1873. In the former factory halls you will experience the original chain machines, presses and other jewelry making tools in action. What were the processes like in the factory, what was the typical everyday life of a worker like? The permanent exhibition shows the development of the Idar-Oberstein jewelry and metalware industry in the 19th and 20th centuries. Here they learn details about the manufacturing processes, from the designs to the finished products.

In the "Villa Bengel", which is part of the monument, you can also discover contemporary jewelry and works of art. Local and international artists show their work in regularly changing exhibitions.

In the "Bengel macht Schule" project, schoolchildren can make their own jewelry under supervision. 1½ hours duration, 10 € per person, program can be extended, last start 2.30 p.m.
